Let’s take a coup d'œil of who teacher Sunflower is behind that pretty, smiling and carefree mirage.

“I'm an outspoken individual, an independent woman, and a go-getting Aries. I'm not afraid to speak my mind if I want to because I value honesty and freedom of speech a lot albeit sometimes I find myself in hot water for doing so. Also, I would say I'm independent because I dislike relying on other people and I believe in my tenacity to do and accomplish things with my capabilities. This unyielding disposition has also influenced me to be a go-getter! I make sure to be at the top of my game when I immerse myself in a certain goal or task. I strive to be an achiever as much as possible, and failure is not an option.” - Sunflower

Let’s take a closer look...

If you didn’t have to worry about money, what would you do all day?

I would play with my dogs, Oreo and Cotton. I am my mother’s favorite, the reason why my siblings, sometimes don’t include me when they play when we were still young. Instead, I play with myself, and since then I appreciate solitude. Now, I get to have two best friends. If I didn’t have to worry about money, I would spend all day snuggling and playing with them. They make everyday pawssible and furfect. There is an old saying, which is certainly true, that pets and dogs return the love you give them ten-fold.

What brings you the most joy in life?

Books. I appreciate the creases and folds and the classic musty smell of books whenever I get a hold of one. I enjoy reading most of my leisure time. Reading is the cheapest way of traveling, they say. And I couldn’t agree more. When I engross myself in books and a minute after I find myself in another universe. I can travel around the world and explore new and obscure places. I perceive parts of myself in some of the fictional characters I meet in books. I get to have a peek at other people’s way of thinking. Reading, it opens your mind, it gives you a whole new experience, and you learn a lot of things. The more you read, the more words you gain exposure to, and they will inevitably make their way into your everyday vocabulary. Being articulate and well-spoken is of great help in any profession, and knowing that you can speak to higher-ups with self-confidence can be an enormous boost to your self-esteem.

What is the most important thing a person can do to improve themselves?

Never compare yourself to other people. Comparing yourself to others only makes your life difficult and brings you misery and pain. You must invest all your energy into pursuing your own aspirations and goals. Don’t waste your precious time on those of others.  There will always be someone better than you at one point in your life. You cannot always win at everything in life. All you have to do is work hard and try your best, and whatever is meant to be will fall into place for you at the right moment. You are you. You will always be you. You will never be anyone else.

Has teaching changed your life? If so, how?

Absolutely, I have learned to stretch my patience, especially when dealing with kids. Although teaching can be tiresome, my little students bring out my inner-child. Empathizing with them, putting myself in their shoes, going through the same difficulty in learning have made me more understanding and appreciate their effort. My being responsible has developed too. I learned how to work with student’s frustrations or combativeness. And I learned an incredible amount of forbearance and understanding.  

What is the hardest thing about being a teacher?

Controlling one’s temper is an arduous thing to do. Meeting culturally diverse people with different perceptions and attitude can sometimes be frustrating, but I have learned the art of keeping one’s cool. As a teacher, you serve as a model not just for your students but the people around you as well. Being a teacher takes patience, dedication, passion, and the ability to do more with less.
